Dick Pope Jr. is a pioneering figure in the world of water skiing and a cornerstone of Florida’s tourism history. He began water skiing at just 13 years old in 1943, performing in Cypress Gardens’ first water ski show, an iconic attraction founded by his father. Pope quickly distinguished himself as a competitive skier, winning the National Water Skiing Championship three years in a row (1948–1950) and achieving the ultimate accolade by capturing the World Water Ski Championship in 1950. 

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Pope played a critical role in shaping Cypress Gardens into a globally recognized entertainment and tourism destination. He served as President of Cypress Gardens for 22 years, stepping down in 1985, overseeing its expansion, operations, and development as a premier Florida attraction. 

Pope’s contributions to the sport of water skiing and the Florida tourism industry have earned him induction into both the Water Ski Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. His pioneering spirit, competitive drive, and leadership have left an enduring legacy in both sport and business, inspiring generations of water skiers and entrepreneurs.
