Otis Birdsong
Otis Birdsong was born on December 9, 1955, in Winter Haven, Florida. He attended Winter Haven High School before heading to the University of Houston, where he established himself as one of the most prolific guards in school history. As a Cougar, Birdsong averaged over 24 points per game during his collegiate career, peaking at 30.3 ppg in his senior year.
In the 1977 NBA Draft, Birdsong was selected second overall by the Kansas City Kings — a testament to his college dominance and expected impact at the professional level He would go on to spend four seasons with the Kings. His best season came in 1980-81, when he averaged a career high of 24.6 points per game.
Over his twelve-season NBA career (1977–1989), Birdsong accumulated 12,544 career points, averaging 18.0 points per game. He was selected to four NBA All-Star games, and in 1981 earned a spot on the All-NBA Second Team, further cementing his status among the league’s top guards of his era.
Beyond the NBA, Birdsong’s success and impact have been acknowledged through multiple hall-of-fame inductions.
