Rowdy Gaines
Rowdy Gaines, born in Winter Haven, Polk County, Florida, is one of the most celebrated American swimmers of all time. He gained international acclaim by winning three Olympic gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, solidifying his place among swimming’s elite. Gaines also earned five gold and three silver medals at the FINA World Aquatics Championships (1978, 1982) and dominated the Pan American Games, capturing seven golds and a bronze in 1979 and 1983.
Following his competitive career, Gaines has remained deeply involved in swimming as a coach, mentor, and broadcaster, sharing his knowledge and passion for the sport. His achievements were recognized with inductions into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1995) and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame (2006). A native of Polk County, Gaines’ legacy continues to inspire swimmers across the nation.
