Andy Bean

Andy Bean, a native of Lakeland, Florida, grew up in Polk County, where he developed his love for golf while attending Lakeland High School. He continued his golf career at the University of Florida, earning All-SEC and All-American honors from 1973 to 1975 and helping the Gators capture the 1973 NCAA team championship.

Turning professional in 1975, Bean competed on the PGA Tour, achieving 11 Tour victories, including a breakout year in 1978 with three wins in six weeks. He was runner-up in multiple major championships, including the PGA Championship and The Open Championship, consistently ranking among the top money earners. Later, he found success on the Champions Tour, adding three more professional wins.

Known for his confidence and competitive spirit — famously saying, “I always think I can beat anybody” — Bean became a respected figure in the golf world. He remained closely tied to Polk County throughout his life, living in Lakeland and contributing to the local community. Bean passed away in 2023 at age 70 and was honored with inductions into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame.
