Charlie Matlock

Charlie Matlock has long been a cornerstone of Florida Southern College’s celebrated golf program, dedicating more than two decades to coaching and mentoring student-athletes. Over his 23 seasons as the head coach of the men’s golf team, Matlock guided the Moccasins to unparalleled success, capturing seven NCAA National Championships and finishing as national runner-up four times. His teams consistently competed at the highest level, placing in the top five nationally in 17 of his last 18 seasons. 

Under Matlock’s leadership, Florida Southern produced some of collegiate golf’s most distinguished players. Three of his student-athletes—Tom Gleeton, Tom Patri, and Lee Janzen—went on to win the prestigious NCAA Individual Championship, while many others built successful careers on the PGA Tour, including stars such as Rocco Mediate, Marco Dawson, and Lee Janzen. 

Beyond his coaching achievements, Matlock is celebrated for his mentorship and his ability to inspire excellence both on and off the course. He has been recognized for his contributions to the sport through his induction into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame and the East Tennessee State University Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in collegiate golf. 

Matlock’s impact extends far beyond trophies and championships; he has shaped the careers and lives of countless young athletes, leaving a lasting imprint on Florida Southern College and the sport of golf as a whole.
