Bobby Shiver

Bobby Shiver

As an athlete and coach at various levels throughout his life, Bobby Shiver excelled at it all.  Shiver was a Little League Baseball All-Star, an All-State Basketball player, captain of the 1950’s Lakeland High School All-Star Team of the Decade and captain of the Lakeland High School All-time All-Star Team of the Century. Shiver, a graduate of Lakeland High School in 1957, led the LHS Basketball team to the state championship as senior.  He would then head north and attend the University of Florida, where he also was a captain for the 1961 basketball team.

After graduating from Florida, Shiver went on to coach at Hillsborough High School. Don Williams was the basketball coach at the time. After one year under Williams at Hillsborough, Williams accepted a job at Milligan College and Shiver took over as Hillsborough’s coach.  From 1962 to 1968, he compiled a career record of 179-19, with four State Final Four appearances.  At the same time, Shiver also coached the baseball team at Hillsborough High School.

Shiver went onto work with Don Williams once again, this time as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida, when Williams was hired in 1969.  As a first year program consisting of only freshman, Shiver would establish a recruiting system that would form the foundation for the USF basketball program to build upon.

Shiver retired from the University of South Florida in 1992 after spending 31 years as an employee for the state of Florida. Shiver also spent 29 of his 31 years as a golf coach for USF, where he compiled 12 conference championships.  In 2006, Shiver was awarded the Billy Chase Memorial Captain’s Award, a special occasion in which Shiver was recognized in front of the team that he led to the 1957 state championship.
